Opportunities
Without a leg up, intergenerational poverty will continue to pull down the chances of young people in Lambeth.
While we’ve seen the area change and certain businesses thrive, many of the benefits of regeneration are not being felt by families who have lived here all their lives.
It forces young people to ask: who is this regeneration for? We ask: how can we ensure young people benefit from regeneration?
Talk it Out Session
LPAC led a Talk it Out session with 27 of their peers to better understand their perspectives on opportunities (or lack thereof), and potential solutions.
Main points raised:
- More support needed for migrants to access opportunities
- Migrants experiencing racism and bullying
- Barriers to opportunities include language, lack of access to networks and not knowing how the system works
Potential solutions identified:
- Sharing information and knowledge with newly arrived people
- Events to connect
- Building awareness
- Better job opportunities
Actions taken
- The LPAC team engaged in discussions with Lambeth MPs about the regeneration of International House.
- LPAC also participated in meetings with senior members of the Metropolitan Thames Valley Housing Association to share our research and manifesto, focusing on the regeneration of the Clapham Park estate.
- In collaboration with the Baytree Centre, a charity providing a safe and supportive space for women and girls, LPAC co-designed a financial literacy education program.
- We also partnered with IRMO (Indoamerican Refugee and Migrant Organisation), a charity that provides Latin Americans with the support and place-based community required to thrive in the UK. Together, we organised the Latin American Youth Forum (LAYF) to ensure young migrants are included in civic life and the economy.
